What to Do First After Getting Engaged

You said yes — now what?

Before you get lost in Pinterest boards and group texts, let’s talk about the steps that actually set your wedding up for success. These are the moves I guide every couple through in the first few weeks after they get engaged.

Step 1: Celebrate and Take It In

You don’t need to start planning the second the ring is on your finger. Have a celebratory dinner, pop champagne, share the news, and soak it in. You only get to be “just engaged” once.

Step 2: Talk About Your Priorities

Before venues, colors, or guest lists, ask each other:

  • What do we want our wedding to feel like?

  • Do we imagine a big party, a tent in the Berkshires, or an intimate weekend?

  • What matters most: guest experience, design, food, or photos?

Step 3: Set a Real Budget

This isn’t the fun step, but it’s the step that makes everything easier. AND don’t go off of The Knot or Wedding Wire, ask around, do your research.

  • Decide your total investment

  • Consider contributions from family

  • Leave room for the “unexpected” (because there’s always something)

Step 4: Draft a Guest List

Even a rough list will help:

  • Estimate how many people you’d invite today vs. your ideal size

  • Your guest count drives your venue choice and budget

Step 5: Secure Your Venue and Date

Popular dates and venues in the Hudson Valley, Berkshires, and Capital Region book 12–18 months in advance.

  • Book your venue first → then your planner (if you only need partial planning)

  • Or book your planner early → so they can guide venue tours, vendor priorities and contracts

Step 6: Consider Hiring a Planner Early

Even a single planning session can save you months of stress. A planner can:

  • Help you avoid costly mistakes

  • Recommend trusted vendors

  • Map your next 3–6 months so you feel clear

Planning your wedding should feel exciting, not overwhelming. If you want clarity and a plan that fits your life, let’s talk.
